Andrew Gavin Hastings, born on January 3, 1962, is a famous Scottish former rugby union player. He played as a fullback. Many people think he is one of the best Scottish rugby players ever. He was a top player of his time.
Gavin Hastings played 61 games for Scotland. He was captain in 20 of those games. He also played for teams like Watsonians, London Scottish, and Cambridge University. He was part of the British Lions team twice. He toured Australia in 1989 and was captain for the tour to New Zealand in 1993.

Gavin Hastings was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He went to George Watson's College in Edinburgh. Later, he studied at Paisley College of Technology, which is now the University of the West of Scotland. He also attended Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he studied Land Economy. He finished his degree in 1986.

Amateur Rugby Playing Days
Gavin Hastings was the captain of the Cambridge University team that won in 1985. During a break from his studies, he played for Auckland University Rugby Football Club in New Zealand. There, he helped them win the Gallaher Shield. In Scotland, he played for the Watsonians club.
Playing for Clubs and Districts
Before rugby became a professional sport, Hastings played for Edinburgh District. He then moved to play for London Scottish. He also played for the Scottish Exiles team. When rugby union became professional in 1996, he was still playing for London Scottish.
International Rugby Achievements
Gavin Hastings led the first Scottish schoolboys' team to win a game in England. He played 5 games for the Scotland 'B' team between 1983 and 1985.
His first game for the main Scotland team was against France in 1986. He was a key player when Scotland won the Grand Slam in 1990. In February 1995, he set a new record for the most games played for Scotland. He played his 53rd international game, passing previous record holders.
Hastings' last game was on June 11, 1995. It was against New Zealand in the quarter-finals of the 1995 Rugby World Cup. By the end of that game, he had scored 667 points for Scotland. This was a Scottish record until Chris Paterson broke it in 2008.
He was the captain of the Scotland team 20 times, including during the 1995 World Cup.
Playing for the British Lions
Gavin Hastings first played for the British Lions in 1986. He played in all three test matches during the successful 1989 tour to Australia. He also played against France in 1989. He was the captain of the Lions team for their 1993 tour to New Zealand. The Lions lost that series 2-1.
After Playing Rugby
On August 30, 2007, Gavin Hastings became the chairman of the new professional rugby club, Edinburgh Rugby.
American Football Career
In 1996, Gavin Hastings tried a different sport. He joined the Scottish Claymores, an American football team in the NFL Europe league. He played for one season as a placekicker. He successfully kicked 24 out of 27 extra points after touchdowns. However, he missed his only attempt at a field goal. Even though the Claymores won the World Bowl '96, Hastings left the team at the end of the season.
Family Life
Gavin Hastings has a younger brother named Scott. Scott also played international rugby for Scotland.
Gavin's son, Adam, plays rugby for Gloucester Rugby and has also played for Scotland. His niece, Kerry-Anne, plays hockey for the Scottish national team.
Gavin Hastings married his wife, Diane, in 1993. His nickname is "Big Gav."
Awards and Recognition
In 1995, Gavin Hastings received an Honorary Blue from Heriot Watt University. This was to recognize his great contributions to sports in Scotland.
He was also awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1993 for his services to rugby union.
Hastings was added to the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2003. Later, he was also inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2013.
Since 2001, Gavin Hastings has been the Patron of the Sandpiper Trust. This Scottish charity helps provide important medical equipment to doctors, nurses, and paramedics in rural areas across Scotland.
