Gehamat Shibasaki (born 18 February 1998) is an Australian professional rugby player. He plays both rugby league and rugby union. Gehamat is a centre for the Brisbane Broncos in the National Rugby League (NRL).

He has also played for other NRL teams like the South Sydney Rabbitohs, North Queensland Cowboys, and Newcastle Knights. Before returning to the Broncos, he played rugby union for Green Rockets Tokatsu in Japan. Gehamat has even represented Queensland in the famous State of Origin series. He also played for the Prime Minister's XIII team.

About Gehamat Shibasaki

Gehamat Shibasaki was born in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. His family has roots from the Torres Strait Islands, Japan, and Malaysia. Gehamat has a younger brother named Jamal, who also plays in the NRL for the North Queensland Cowboys.

Gehamat started his rugby league journey playing for a junior team called Townsville Brothers. Later, the Brisbane Broncos team signed him up.

Gehamat's Rugby Career

Starting Out in Rugby League

Gehamat played for the Brisbane Broncos' junior team, called the NYC team, in 2016 and 2017. In July 2016, he played for the Queensland Under 20s team. He played as a centre in their game against New South Wales.

In February 2017, Gehamat was chosen to be part of Brisbane's team for the 2017 NRL Auckland Nines tournament. He played for Queensland's Under 20s team again in May 2017.

Playing in the NRL

In 2018, Gehamat moved up from the Under 20s team to play in the Queensland Cup for the Norths Devils. In July 2018, he played for Queensland Under 20s for the third time. This time, his team won their first title with a 30-12 victory.

Gehamat made his official NRL debut in Round 22 of the 2018 NRL season. He played for the Brisbane Broncos against the North Queensland Cowboys in his hometown of Townsville. After his first game, he signed a new contract with the Brisbane Broncos.

Time with Different Teams

Gehamat played 12 games for Brisbane in the 2019 NRL season. The team made it to the finals that year. However, they lost their elimination final game. Later in 2019, Gehamat left Brisbane and joined the Newcastle Knights. He signed a three-year contract with them.

In the 2020 NRL season, Gehamat played 11 games for Newcastle. He played three more games for Newcastle in 2021 before leaving the team at the end of the season.

In July 2022, Gehamat signed a special contract with the North Queensland Cowboys. He then signed a one-year contract with them for 2023. He made his club debut for North Queensland in Round 3 of the 2023 NRL season. In September 2023, it was announced that Gehamat would be leaving the Cowboys.

In 2024, Gehamat joined the South Sydney Rabbitohs for a short time. He helped the team when other players were injured. During this time, he was also playing for the Townsville Blackhawks in the Queensland Cup.

Return to the Broncos and State of Origin

In early 2025, Gehamat signed a new deal to train and play with the Brisbane Broncos again. He started at centre in a pre-season game and scored the first try for the Broncos. In Round 1, he started at centre again and scored his first try for the club in a big win.

Gehamat continued to play well for Brisbane. In Round 4, he scored two tries and was named player of the match. He scored two more tries in Round 14 and another two in Round 16, helping his team win a close game. In Round 17, he scored his third double in a row!

In June 2025, Gehamat Shibasaki was chosen to play for Queensland in the 2025 State of Origin series. This was his debut in the famous State of Origin series.
