Geir Ivarsøy facts for kids
Geir Ivarsøy (born June 27, 1957 – died March 9, 2006) was a very important programmer at a company called Opera Software. He is famous for helping to create the Opera web browser, which many people use today.
Early Work and the Start of Opera
Geir Ivarsøy and his friend Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner worked together in a research group. They were part of the Norwegian state telephone company, which is now known as Telenor. While working there, they developed some special software that helped people look at things on the Internet. They called this early program MultiTorg Opera.
However, Telenor decided they didn't want to continue working on this program. So, in 1995, Geir and Jon got the rights to their software. This meant they could keep working on it themselves. They decided to start their own company, which became Opera Software.
Growing Success of Opera
The web browser they created eventually became known simply as Opera. It grew to be very popular around the world. Opera Software also grew a lot. It started with just a few people and now has more than 380 employees. The company's main offices are in Oslo, Norway.
Geir's Later Years
In January 2004, Geir Ivarsøy decided to step down from his role as a board member at Opera Software. Even though he left the board, he continued to work for the company. In June 2005, he was chosen to be part of a special group called the nomination committee for the company.
Sadly, Geir Ivarsøy passed away in March 2006. He had been battling cancer for a long time. His work helped shape how many people experience the Internet today.
