Giacomo Russo (born October 23, 1937 – died June 18, 1967) was an Italian racing driver. He was better known by his racing nickname, "Geki". Geki was a very skilled driver who competed in many races, including a few in the top-level Formula One series.
Who Was "Geki"?
Geki was a very experienced driver in Italy's smaller racing series. He was especially good in Formula Three, which is a step below Formula One. He won the Italian Formula Three championship four times in a row! That's from 1961 to 1964. This shows he was a true champion in these races.
Formula One Dreams
Geki tried his hand at Formula One, the highest level of motorsport. He took part in three Italian Grand Prix races between 1964 and 1966. In 1964, he tried to qualify for the race but didn't make it. He was driving for the Rob Walker Racing Team. For his other two races, he drove for the famous Team Lotus. Even though he raced in Formula One, he didn't score any championship points.
A Tragic End
Sadly, Geki's life was cut short in a tragic accident. This happened during an Italian Formula Three race in Caserta, Italy, in 1967.
The accident involved several cars. One driver, Beat Fehr, got out of his car to warn others about the crash ahead. However, the next group of cars, including Geki's, couldn't avoid the wreckage. Geki's car crashed into a wall, and he died instantly. Beat Fehr was also hit by a car and died. Another driver, Romano "Tiger" Perdomi, passed away in the hospital eight days later.
