Gemma Mengual Civil is a famous Spanish synchronised swimmer. She was born on April 12, 1977, in Barcelona, Spain. Gemma is known for her amazing performances in the water.

She has represented Spain in many big competitions. This includes the Olympic Games in 2000, 2004, and 2008.

Gemma's Amazing Career

Gemma Mengual has had a long and successful career in synchronised swimming. She has won many medals for her country.

Early Achievements

In 2003, Gemma earned two bronze medals at the 2003 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona. She won one for her solo performance and another for her duet. Two years later, at the 2005 World Aquatics Championships in Montreal, she won another bronze in solo and team events. She also took home a silver medal for her duet.

European and World Success

Gemma continued to shine in 2006, winning two silver medals at the 2006 European Aquatics Championships. These were for her solo and duet free routines. In 2007, at the World Championships in Melbourne, she won a silver medal in the solo technical routine and a bronze in the solo free routine.

Her incredible talent was clear at the 2008 European Aquatics Championships. There, she won gold medals in every event she competed in!

Olympic Glory

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing were a highlight for Gemma. She won two silver medals, one in the duet event and another with her team. These were very important achievements for her and for Spain.

Retirement and Comeback

Gemma first announced her retirement from the sport on February 15, 2012. After stepping away from competing, she started coaching the Spanish national synchronised swimming team.

However, in June 2015, Gemma decided to return to the pool! She aimed to compete at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia. She joined Pau Ribas, whom she had coached before, to compete in the mixed duet event. Even after the World Championships, she decided to keep competing. In September 2015, she confirmed she would compete in the duet at the 2016 Summer Olympics with Ona Carbonell.

Beyond Competition

Gemma Mengual also shared her knowledge during the 2020 Olympic Games. These games were held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She worked as an expert commentator for the swimming and floor events. She gave helpful insights and opinions on the performances of the athletes.
