History of Geneva

The history of Geneva was first written down by John and William Bartram in 1765-1766. Later, other experts also documented the area. These included anthropologist Daniel Britton in 1850 and scientists from Harvard University in 1875.

Geneva Cemetery

The Geneva Cemetery is on land that was given by Progar Debogory. He was the head of one of the Russian families who settled in the Geneva area in the 1800s. Today, 17 soldiers from the U.S. Civil War are buried there. Most of them, 15 soldiers, fought for the Confederacy. Only two soldiers fought for the Union.

Early Schools in Geneva

In the early days, schools in Geneva were held in people's homes. The first official school building was built in 1874. This land was also donated by Progar Debogory.

By 1903, a new one-room schoolhouse was built to replace the first one. In 1924, a bigger brick building with four rooms was constructed. This new building could fit more students.

In 1941, the principal, W.L. Seig, started a special 4-H program. This program taught students important skills like home economics and farming. Rollins College helped support this program. This achievement is recognized in the "History of the Seminole County Public Schools."

In 1988, a new elementary school was built around the old brick schoolhouse. The old schoolhouse was saved for the community. In 1995, it became a family resource center. Finally, in 2008, the building was dedicated as a rural heritage center for the community.
