Genlee is a small place in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Genlee is located near the border of Durham and Wake County. You can find it where North Carolina Highway 55 meets South Alston Avenue. This area is also close to where the old Durham and Southern Railway used to run.
History
The community of Genlee has an interesting history regarding its name. When it was first established in 1904, it was called Togo. This name was chosen after a city in Japan. The first railroad station was built there around that time.
However, the name of the community changed later on. In 1941, after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the community's name was changed to Genlee. This new name was chosen to honor Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
