Gennady Ivanovich Nevelskoy (Russian: Генна́дий Ива́нович Невельско́й) was a famous Russian navigator. He was born on December 5, 1813, in Drakino, Russia. He passed away on April 29, 1876, in St. Petersburg. Nevelskoy is known for his important explorations in the Russian Far East.

In 1848, Nevelskoy took charge of a big journey. This journey was called the Amur Expedition. It lasted from 1849 to 1855. During this time, he explored the area that is now the Russian Far East. He specifically explored Sakhalin Island and the mouth of the Amur River.

Nevelskoy made a very important discovery. He proved that the Strait of Tartary was not a closed gulf. Instead, it was a true strait. This strait connected to the Amur River's wide estuary. A very narrow part of this strait was later named the Nevelskoy Strait in his honor.

On August 13, 1850, Nevelskoy founded a new settlement. This was Nikolayevsk-on-Amur, the first Russian town in that region. Before Nevelskoy, a Japanese explorer named Mamiya Rinzō had explored the same area. However, the Russians did not know about Mamiya Rinzō's work. So, Nevelskoy's report was the first proof for them that Sakhalin is actually an island.

Because of his discoveries, the Gulf of Tartary was renamed the Strait of Tartary. The narrowest part of this strait was named the Strait of Nevelskoy. This section connects the main strait with the Amur River's estuary.
