Geoffrey I (born around 980 – died November 20, 1008) was an important ruler in the history of Brittany. He was also known as Geoffrey of Rennes or Geoffrey Berengar. Geoffrey was the oldest son of Duke Conan I of Brittany.
When his father died, Geoffrey became the Count of Rennes. This meant he was the ruler of the area around the city of Rennes. In 992, he also took the title of Duke of Brittany. Brittany was a powerful and independent region at that time. However, Geoffrey didn't have full control over all parts of it, especially in Lower Brittany.

Early Life and Challenges
Geoffrey was the son of Duke Conan I and Ermengarde-Gerberga of Anjou. His grandmother was Judicael Berengar, who was also a Count of Rennes.
When Geoffrey became the Duke of Brittany, he faced several big challenges. One problem was that the region of Blois was trying to take over parts of his land. Another challenge was that Vikings were attacking the coast of Brittany. Geoffrey also had to decide if he should accept help and protection from the powerful County of Anjou.
Forming Alliances
A Special Marriage Agreement
In 996, when Geoffrey was about 16 years old, he made a very important agreement with Richard II, the Duke of Normandy. This was a "dynastic alliance," which means it was a partnership between two ruling families. They decided to have a double marriage to make their families stronger together.
The wedding ceremonies happened at Mont Saint-Michel, which is a famous place on the border between Brittany and Normandy. Geoffrey married Hawise of Normandy, who was the daughter of Richard I of Normandy and the sister of Richard II. At the same time, Richard II married Judith of Brittany, who was Geoffrey's own sister. This double wedding helped to create a strong bond between Brittany and Normandy.
Geoffrey's Children
Geoffrey and Hawise had four children together:
- Alan III of Brittany (born 997 – died 1040)
- Evenus (born around 998 – died after 1037)
- Odo, Count of Penthièvre (died 1079)
- Adela, who became an Abbess (a leader of a group of nuns) at Saint-Georges.
Death
Geoffrey I died on November 20, 1008. He was traveling on a pilgrimage to Rome when he passed away.
