Changing Positions
When Georg Stollenwerk first started playing for the national team in 1951, he played as an inside right (a type of forward). During the 1958 FIFA World Cup, he was chosen as a backup goalkeeper in case the main goalkeeper got hurt.
His main position was usually an inside forward, which is a type of attacker. But in 1957, his coach at 1. FC Köln, Hennes Weisweiler, changed his position. He became a right back, which is a defensive player on the right side of the field.
This change was very good for his career. He quickly became excellent in this new role. Because of this, the national team coach, Sepp Herberger, called him back to play for Germany. Coach Herberger was looking for a new right back, and Georg Stollenwerk fit the role perfectly. By 1958, he was the regular right back for West Germany.
