George Agar, 1st Baron Callan (born 4 December 1751 – died 29 October 1815) was an important Anglo-Irish politician and a member of the nobility. He was also a member of the Privy Council of Ireland, a group of advisors to the King or Queen.

George Agar was the third son of James Agar from Ringwood, a place in County Kilkenny, Ireland. His mother was Rebecca Flower. His aunt was Ellis Bermingham, who was also known as the Countess of Brandon. George Agar went to school at Eton and later studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University. His father passed away in 1769 after a serious political disagreement.

George Agar's Political Journey

George Agar started his political career in 1776. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons, which was like the parliament for Ireland at that time. He represented the area of Callan. He held this position until 1790.

Joining the Privy Council

In 1789, George Agar became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a special group of people who advised the King on important matters concerning Ireland.

Becoming Baron Callan

In 1790, George Agar was given a special title. He became Baron Callan, a noble title in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he was now a "peer" and could sit in the Irish House of Lords, which was the upper house of the Irish parliament.

Representing Ireland in London

After Ireland and Great Britain joined together in 1801, George Agar was chosen for another important role. He became one of the first 28 Irish Representative peers. These peers were elected to represent Ireland in the British House of Lords in London.

Later Life and Legacy

Lord Callan never married during his lifetime. When he passed away in October 1815, at the age of 63, his title of Baron Callan ended because he had no children to inherit it.
