George Butler (born July 5, 1774 – died April 30, 1853) was an important English school leader and churchman. He was the Headmaster of Harrow School from 1805 to 1829. Later, he became the Dean of Peterborough, a high position in the church, from 1842 until he passed away.

Life and Work
George Butler was the son of Weeden Butler, who was also a teacher. George went to the school in Chelsea where his father taught. After that, he studied at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.
Early Career and Education
At Cambridge, George Butler was very good at math. In 1794, he earned the title of "senior wrangler." This means he was the top math student in his year. He continued his studies and became a "fellow" at Sidney Sussex College. A fellow is like a senior researcher and teacher at a university. He taught both math and classical subjects like Latin and Greek.
In 1804, he was chosen as a public examiner for the university. The next year, he was one of the special preachers.
Leading Harrow School
From 1805 to 1829, George Butler was the Headmaster of Harrow School. This is a famous boarding school for boys in England. He was known for his wide knowledge and his ability to manage the school well. He was also good at sports, especially track and field. These skills helped make his time as headmaster very successful and popular with the students.
Church Leadership
After leaving Harrow School, George Butler moved to Gayton, Northamptonshire. In 1836, he became the chancellor for the Anglican Diocese of Peterborough. This was an important role in the church. Then, in 1842, he was appointed the Dean of Peterborough. He held this position until he died in 1853.
Family Life
George Butler and his wife, Sarah Maria Gray, had four sons and at least three daughters. Many of his children and grandchildren became notable people.
- Spencer Perceval Butler (1828–1915): He was a lawyer and administrator.
- Arthur Gray Butler (1831–1909): He became the Headmaster of Haileybury College.
- Henry Montagu Butler (1833–1918): He followed in his father's footsteps and became Headmaster of Harrow School. He also became the Dean of Gloucester and later the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge.
- Louisa Jane Butler (1822-1897): In 1853, she married Francis Galton, a well-known scientist.
