George Chaworth, 1st Viscount Chaworth (born around 1568 – died July 3, 1639) was an English politician. He served as a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, from 1621 to 1624. Later, he was given special titles by the King, becoming Baron Chaworth and Viscount Chaworth.

Early Life and Education

George Chaworth was the son of John Chaworth and Jane Vincent. His family lived in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England.

When he was about 17 years old, in 1586, he started studying at Trinity College, Oxford, which is a famous university. Later, in 1605, he joined Gray's Inn, a place where people studied to become lawyers.

In 1605, he was made a knight by the King. This meant he was given the title "Sir." He also earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree from Oxford University in the same year.

His Work and Public Service

George Chaworth held several important jobs during his life. From 1616 to 1639, he was the Constable of Bristol Castle. A Constable was like a governor or keeper of the castle.

He also worked as a diplomat, representing England in other countries. In 1621, he went to Brussels as a special ambassador. His job was to talk with the Archduchess Infanta Isabel and try to solve problems between England and Spain. He aimed to get Spain to leave a place called the Rhine Palatinate and to make a peace treaty. He even wrote down his experiences and observations from his travels in France and the Netherlands during this mission.

Serving in Parliament

In 1621, George Chaworth was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nottinghamshire. This meant he represented the people of that area in the government. In 1624, he was elected as an MP again, this time for Arundel.

Becoming a Viscount

On March 4, 1628, King Charles I gave George Chaworth two important noble titles. He became the 1st Viscount Chaworth of Armagh and the 1st Baron Chaworth of Tryme.

His main home was Wiverton Hall in Nottinghamshire. He also served as the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire from late 1638 to 1639. A High Sheriff was a very important local official, responsible for law and order.

Later Life and Family

George Chaworth passed away in 1639, when he was about 70 years old, in Bath, Somerset. He was buried on July 15, 1639, at St. Andrew's Church, Langar, in Nottinghamshire.

He was married to Mary Knyveton. They had a son named John, who inherited his father's titles after he died.
