A Look Back in Time
Why is it Called the "Cathedral of the Vale"?
People often call St Andrew's Church the "Cathedral of the Vale." This is because it is quite a large and grand church for a small village like Langar. The village is located in an area called the Vale of Belvoir. This nickname might also come from its importance as a place where people went on special religious journeys long ago, during Saxon times.
Restorations and Memorials
The church was greatly repaired and updated in 1860 by a person named Thomas Butler. This type of work is called a Victorian restoration. Inside the church, you can find special memorials. These are like monuments or plaques that remember important people.
- There are memorials for members of the Howe family, including Scrope Howe, 1st Viscount Howe (who passed away in 1712).
- You can also see memorials for Emanuel Scrope Howe, 2nd Viscount Howe (who passed away in 1734).
- Another important memorial is for Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe (who passed away in 1799).
In one part of the church, called the north transept, there are monuments for the Chaworth family. They lived nearby at Wiverton Hall. In another part, the south transept, there is a grand monument for Thomas, Lord Scrope, and his wife, Philadelphia. Their son, Emanuel, is shown kneeling at their feet on this monument. This area also has a tablet remembering Admiral Howe, his second daughter Mary Juliana Howe, and Mary, Countess Howe.

The Church Organ
The church has a large musical instrument called an organ. This organ was brought to St Andrew's in 1906 from St James' Church, Codnor. We do not know exactly where it was first made. However, it was made bigger in 1876 by a company called Lloyd of Nottingham. The same company then moved it to Langar. You can find more detailed information about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
