The Church's Long History
This church has been standing for a very long time! Some parts of it, like the arched walkways inside, were built in the 1200s. Most of the church you see today was built in the 1300s.
What the Church Looks Like
St Giles' Church has several main parts. It has a central area called the nave, and on either side, there are north and south aisles. There's also a south porch, which is an entrance area, and a chancel, which is the part of the church where the altar is.
The Church Tower and Bells
The church also has a tall tower that was built around the year 1450. This tower is home to six bells. One of these bells is very old, dating back to the 1500s! Two other bells were made in 1669 and 1757. A fourth bell was remade in 1905, and a fifth was added in the same year. The newest bell, called the treble bell, was put in place in 1981.
The Old Church Clock
For many years, from 1694 to 1906, St Giles' Church had a special clock made by a clockmaker named Richard Roe. This old clock is no longer at the church. You can now see it preserved and on display at the Nottingham Industrial Museum.
