St Mary's Church in Barnstone is a historic building located in the village of Barnstone, Nottinghamshire, England. It is part of the Church of England and belongs to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. This church was finished in 1857. It was built in the Gothic Revival style, which means it looked like churches from the Middle Ages.

What Does St Mary's Church Look Like?

The church building was "rebuilt" in 1857 by a person named T. D. Hall. He was a very important person in Nottinghamshire at the time. The project cost about £1,200, which was a lot of money back then!

Inside the Church

St Mary's Church has two main parts: the nave (where people sit) and the chancel (the area near the altar). At the front, there's a small tower called a turret. This turret holds two bells.

Inside, you can see some special features:

  • There are memorials that remember people from the two World Wars.
  • The church has beautiful stained glass windows from the Victorian era. The window at the front has five round, colorful glass pictures.
  • The seats (pews), the stand for reading (lectern), the raised platform for sermons (pulpit), and the rail near the altar are all made from strong oak wood.
  • You can also spot 15 small coats of arms hanging on the walls. One of these is very old and came from an even earlier chapel that stood here.

A Look Back in Time: The Old Chapel

Before the current church was built, there was an older chapel on or near the same spot. Records from 1832 describe it as a small building with a short tower. This old chapel was thought to be connected to All Saints' Church, Granby. It was also linked to a very old chapel dedicated to St. Atheburga or St. Aubrey.

What Happened to the Church?

St Mary's Church, Barnstone, stopped being used for church services in 2017. In 2019, there were plans to change the church building into a large home with five bedrooms.

Who Does the Church Belong To?

Even though St Mary's Church is not currently in use, it is still part of a group of churches called the Wiverton group of parishes. This group includes several other churches in the area:
