Sir George Ebenezer Wilson Couper, 2nd Baronet (born April 29, 1824 – died March 5, 1908) was an important British official who worked in India. He held special titles like Knight Commander of the Star of India (KCSI), Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB), and Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE). A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.
About Sir George Couper
George Couper was the oldest son of Sir George Couper, who was also a Baronet. His father worked for Princess Victoria, Duchess of Kent, who was the mother of Queen Victoria. His father received the Baronet title in 1841.
George Couper went to school at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, which is a famous military college. In 1846, he went to India to work for the British government. He joined the Bengal Civil Service, which was a group of British officials who helped run India.
He received an honor called the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1860. At that time, he was working as a secretary (a helper or advisor) to a main official in a region of India called Oude.
His Work in India
Sir George Couper became the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces in India. He held this important job from July 1876 to February 1877. A Lieutenant-Governor was like a leader or manager of a large area.
In 1877, he received another special honor, becoming a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India. The next year, in 1878, he was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire. These honors were given for his service in India.
From February 1877 to April 1882, he continued his important work. He was the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces and also the Chief Commissioner of Oudh. This meant he was in charge of two big regions in India.
His Family Life
In 1852, Sir George Couper married Caroline Penelope Every. She was the sister of another Baronet, Sir Henry Every.
Sir George and Caroline had three sons and one daughter. All three of their sons joined the military. Their daughter married a man named Sir Frederick William Benson. Sir George Couper passed away in Camberley when he was 84 years old. His oldest son, Ramsay George Henry Couper, became the next Baronet after him.
