George Darby Haviland facts for kids
George Darby Haviland (born 1857, died 1901) was a clever British man who was both a surgeon (a doctor who performs operations) and a naturalist. A naturalist is someone who studies nature, like plants and animals. He was born in a place called Warbleton in Sussex, England.
George Haviland traveled far from home. He worked as the Director of the Raffles Museum in Singapore. This is like being the head of a big museum that collects and shows interesting things from nature and history. He was also a medical officer in Sarawak and the Curator of the Sarawak Museum in Kuching from 1891 to 1893. Being a curator means he was in charge of the museum's collections.
In 1895, he went back to England. There, he worked at the Kew Herbarium in London. A herbarium is like a library for dried plant specimens. Later, he moved to South Africa and passed away in a place called Natal.
Plants Named After Haviland
Because George Haviland was such an important naturalist, several plant species were named in his honor. This is a special way to remember scientists and their discoveries. Here are some of the plants that carry his name:
- Alangium havilandii
- Alsophila havilandii
- Barringtonia havilandii
- Chionanthus havilandii
- Diospyros havilandii
- Lithocarpus havilandii
- Shorea havilandii
- Vatica havilandii
- Voacanga havilandii
- Xanthophyllum havilandii
When scientists talk about animals, his special short name (called a zoological author abbreviation) is Haviland.
