George Fosbery Lyster

George Fosbery Lyster (1821–1899) was a very important engineer. He helped design and build many of the docks and harbours in England and Ireland. He was also known as G. F. Lyster. He took over from another famous engineer, John Hartley, as the main engineer for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.

About George Fosbery Lyster

George Fosbery Lyster was born on September 7, 1821. His birthplace was Mount Talbot in County Roscommon, Ireland. He was the third son of Colonel Anthony Lyster.

He went to school at King William's College on the Isle of Man. After school, he trained to become an engineer. He learned a lot from a well-known engineer named James Meadows Rendel.

His Engineering Projects

George Lyster worked on many big projects. He was in charge of building most of the docks in Birkenhead. He also worked on the docks at the northern part of the dock area.

Some of the other important docks he built include:

  • The Herculaneum Dock
  • The Harrington Dock
  • The Toxteth Dock

He also made the River Shannon wider in Ireland. In the 1850s, he built a very large safe harbour. This was called the Great Harbour of Refuge at Holyhead.

In 1861, George Lyster became the Engineer-in-Chief for the Liverpool Docks. This meant he was the head engineer for all the dock projects there. He took over this important job from John Bernard Hartley.

In 1886, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a special honour for people who have done great things in science and knowledge.

George Fosbery Lyster passed away on May 11, 1899. He was 77 years old.

His Family

George Lyster was married two times. His first marriage was in 1848 to Martha E. Sanderson. Later in his life, in 1898, he married Blanche E. I. Maude.

He had a son named Anthony George Lyster (1852-1920). Anthony also became a famous harbour engineer, just like his father.
