George Gwilt (1746–1807) was an important English architect. He was also known as George Gwilt the Elder. He designed many buildings, especially in and around London.

George Gwilt was a talented architect. An architect is someone who designs buildings. He planned how buildings would look and how they would be built. He also worked as an architect surveyor for the county of Surrey. This meant he was in charge of checking and planning public buildings and projects in that area.

George Gwilt came from a family of builders. His sons, George and Joseph, also became architects. They learned their skills in his office in Southwark, London. Another famous architect, John Shaw, also trained with 'George Gwilt & Sons'.

George Gwilt's Amazing Buildings

George Gwilt designed many different kinds of buildings and structures. Here are some of his well-known projects:

  • Cobham Bridge (around 1782): He designed this bridge in Cobham. Bridges are important for people to cross rivers and valleys safely.
  • Leatherhead Bridge (1782–1783): He helped rebuild and make an older bridge bigger in Leatherhead. This made it easier for people and goods to travel.
  • The Camden Chapel (1796–1798): This was a chapel he designed in Camberwell. Chapels are buildings used for religious services.
  • Horsemonger Lane Gaol and Sessions House (1791–1799): George Gwilt designed this large public building in Newington Causeway, London. It was an important structure for the city at the time. Part of it was rebuilt later.
  • West India Docks Warehouses (1800–1804): He worked on these big warehouses with his son, George. Warehouses are large buildings used to store goods, especially near docks where ships arrive. The West India Docks were very busy ports in London.
