George Henry McManus was an important general in the United States Army. He was born on December 23, 1867, and lived until August 8, 1954. He served his country in several conflicts, including the Philippine–American War and World War I.

Early Life and Education

George Henry McManus was born in Hudson, Iowa, on December 23, 1867. He went to Iowa State Teachers College and earned a degree. After that, he joined the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point. He was a very good student, finishing 9th out of 51 in his class when he graduated in 1893.

Military Service

After graduating, McManus became an officer in the artillery. He specialized in the Coast Artillery, which protects coastlines. This branch was formed in 1907.

Early Conflicts

McManus served in important military actions early in his career. He was part of the China Relief Expedition. He also fought in the Philippine–American War. During these times, he served in different parts of the world, including the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Philippines.

World War I Role

During World War I, McManus had a key job. He was a troop movement officer in Hoboken, New Jersey. This meant he helped organize and send soldiers overseas. On October 1, 1918, he was promoted to brigadier general. For his excellent work, he received two special awards: the Distinguished Service Medal and the Navy Cross.

Retirement

George McManus retired from the Army on December 1, 1931. He retired as a brigadier general.

Personal Life and Legacy

On January 7, 1897, George McManus married Gertrude Kessler. They had four children together: Sarah C. McManus, George Henry McManus, Jr., Thomas Kessler McManus, and Mary Alice McManus. McManus passed away in San Francisco, California, on August 27, 1954. He is buried at the San Francisco National Cemetery.
