Buildings Designed by George Hadfield

George Hadfield designed many important buildings in the United States. Here are some of his most famous works:

  • Original Treasury Department building: He drew the plans for this building in 1798. It was finished in 1800. This building was partly damaged by fire in 1801. It was later burned by British forces in 1814 during the Burning of Washington.
  • Navy Department: This building was completed in 1800.
  • Washington Jail: Built in 1801, this building was a prison. It was later changed into a hospital. It burned down in 1861.
  • Marine Corps Commandant's House: This house was built between 1801 and 1805. It is where the leader of the U.S. Marine Corps lives.
  • Arlington House (also known as the Custis-Lee Mansion): This famous historical home was built in 1818.
  • District of Columbia City Hall: This building, completed in 1820, is where the city government of Washington, D.C., works.
  • Van Ness Mausoleum: This is a large, grand tomb.

Other Possible Designs

George Hadfield might have designed other buildings too.

  • Historic Huntley: This is another building that he may have designed.

Some of his other works are harder to identify. This is because they are not in the Greek Revival style, which was popular at the time. For example, Hadfield is also known for making changes to The Octagon House.
