Sir George Hay, 2nd Earl of Kinnoull (1596 – 5 October 1644) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was a military officer and a political leader. He held the title of Earl of Kinnoull.
About George Hay
George Hay was the son of George Hay, 1st Earl of Kinnoull. His father was given the title of Earl by King Charles I in 1633. His mother was Margaret, daughter of Sir James Halyburton.
Early Life and Career
George Hay became a member of the Privy Council. This was a group of advisors to the King. He also served as the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard from 1632 to 1635. The Yeomen of the Guard were a special group of soldiers who protected the King.
His Role in History
George Hay was very loyal to King Charles I. He fought for the King during the English Civil War. This was a big conflict in England between supporters of the King and supporters of Parliament. George Hay was known for his strong loyalty and brave actions as a soldier.
In 1643, he refused to sign the Solemn League and Covenant. This was an agreement between Scottish and English leaders. It aimed to change the Church of England to be more like the Scottish church.
George Hay passed away in Whitehall, London, on 5 October 1644. He was buried at Waltham Abbey Church in Essex.
His Family
George Hay had an older brother, Sir Peter Hay. Peter died in 1621 without marrying. This meant George became the next Earl of Kinnoull.
In 1622, George Hay married Ann Douglas. She was the oldest daughter of William Douglas, 7th Earl of Morton. George and Ann had a large family with six sons and six daughters:
