George Home was the son of Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home. His mother was Nicola Ker. George became the 4th Lord Home after his older brother, Alexander Home, 3rd Lord Home, passed away on October 8, 1516.

Building and Family Life

By 1522, George Home had rebuilt Fast Castle. This was an important fortress in Scotland. He married Mariotta Haliburton before October 30, 1531. Mariotta was the daughter of Patrick Haliburton of Dirleton. George and Mariotta had a son named Alexander Home, 5th Lord Home, who later became the next Lord Home. They also had a daughter, Margaret, who married Alexander Erskine of Gogar.

A Leader in Battle

George Home was a military leader. He led Scottish cavalry, which are soldiers who fight on horseback, in a small fight just before the big Battle of Pinkie Cleugh. This battle was a major event in Scottish history. George was hurt during this skirmish. While he was recovering in Edinburgh, his wife, Mariotta, had to make a difficult decision. She negotiated the surrender of Hume Castle on September 22, 1547.
