George Jean Nathan (born February 14, 1882 – died April 8, 1958) was a famous American writer. He was known for being a drama critic, which means he wrote reviews and opinions about plays. He also worked as a magazine editor, helping to create and publish popular magazines.
Nathan worked closely with another famous writer, H. L. Mencken. Together, they made the magazine The Smart Set very well-known. They also helped start and edit other important magazines like The American Mercury and The American Spectator.
Early Life and Education
Nathan was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His parents were Ella (Nirdlinger) and Charles Naret Nathan.
He went to Cornell University and graduated in 1904. While he was there, he was part of a special group called Quill and Dagger. He also worked as an editor for the school newspaper, the Cornell Daily Sun.

George Jean Nathan was known for being popular with women. He dated many actresses and people involved in the theater.
A character in the 1950 movie All About Eve was based on Nathan. This character, named Addison De Witt, was a theater critic who spent time with a young actress.
Nathan had a long romantic relationship with the famous actress Lillian Gish. This relationship started in the late 1920s and lasted for almost ten years. Lillian Gish was asked to marry him many times, but she always said no.
Later in his life, in 1955, Nathan married a stage actress named Julie Haydon. She was much younger than him.
Death
George Jean Nathan passed away in New York City in 1958. He was 76 years old.
Legacy and Awards
Nathan wrote only one play during his life. It was a short play called The Eternal Mystery. It was first performed in 1913 at the Princess Theatre in New York.
An important award for people who write about drama is named after him. It is called the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism. This award honors excellent writing about plays and theater.
