George Kekewich was an English politician who lived in the 1600s. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament. During the English Civil War, he supported the side called the Parliamentarians.

Who Was George Kekewich?

George Kekewich was an important figure during a very exciting time in English history. He was involved in politics and the big conflict known as the English Civil War. This war was fought between those who supported the King and those who supported Parliament. Kekewich was on the side of Parliament.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In April 1640, George Kekewich was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Liskeard. This Parliament was known as the Short Parliament because it only lasted for a short time. Even though he wasn't chosen again in November 1640 for the next Parliament, he continued to strongly support the Parliament's cause. He even became a high-ranking officer, a lieutenant colonel, in their army.

Serving Parliament During the War

Kekewich was very active in the war effort. He served the Parliament in important areas like Plymouth, Cornwall, and Devonshire. After the main fighting ended, he asked the House of Lords for a new job. He wanted to continue serving the country.

Governor of St Mawes Castle

Because of his loyalty and service, George Kekewich was made the Governor of St Mawes Castle. This was a very important job, as the castle was a key defensive spot. While he was governor, St Mawes Castle was also used as a prison.

Joining the Long Parliament

In 1647, Kekewich became a member of the Long Parliament. This Parliament was called "Long" because it lasted for many years. He joined to replace members who had been removed because they supported the King. However, in 1648, he himself was removed from Parliament during an event called Pride's Purge. This was when some members of Parliament were forced out by the army.
