The George King House, also known as the King-Hart House, is a historic home located at 12 North Main Street in Sharon, Connecticut. This old brick house has parts that date back to 1769. It is important because of its connections to two interesting people: George King and Thomas C. Hart.

George King was a well-known local businessman during the American Revolutionary War. Later, Thomas C. Hart became a United States Senator and an Admiral in the United States Navy. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It was also listed earlier, in 1993, as part of the wider Sharon Historic District.

What is the George King House?

The King House sits in a special spot in Sharon, facing the northern end of the town's long green. It is located where Main Street turns into North Main Street. The property covers about 12 acres and stretches north to Beardsley Brook.

The main part of the house is a two-story building made of brick. It has a special roof called a gambrel roof, which has two different slopes on each side. There are also several additions, or "ells," extending from the house. Some of these additions are very old, while others were built in the 1920s.

Who Lived in the House?

The oldest part of the house, one of its additions, was built in 1769. This part was bought in 1783 by George King. The house stayed in the King family for a long time, until 1906.

George King: A Revolutionary War Figure

George King was an important businessman in the local area. During the American Revolutionary War, he worked as an army commissary. This meant he was in charge of getting food and supplies for the soldiers. His work was very important for the army during the war.

Thomas C. Hart: Admiral and Senator

Later, the house came back into the King family when Caroline Brownson Hart bought it. She was a great-great-granddaughter of George King. Caroline was married to Admiral Thomas C. Hart.

The Harts made big changes to the house in 1925, adding more sections. Thomas C. Hart had a long and impressive career in the Navy. He started serving during the Spanish–American War. He was very important in helping to develop the United States Navy's submarine fleet. He also served for a short time as a United States Senator.

What Does the House Look Like?

The George King House is a two-story building made of brick. It has a distinctive gambrel roof with windows that stick out, called gabled dormers. The outside of the house has special details, like decorative stone blocks at the corners.

Inside, the house follows a "center-hall plan." This means there's a main hallway in the middle with rooms on either side. Many of the original features are still there, including a beautiful central staircase.
