George William Fox Kinnaird (born April 14, 1807, died January 7, 1878) was an important Scottish politician. He was known as the 9th Lord Kinnaird. He belonged to the Whig political party. Lord Kinnaird worked for the government as the Master of the Buckhounds from 1839 to 1841. This job involved managing the royal hunting dogs.

Early Life and Family

George Kinnaird was the oldest son of Charles Kinnaird, the 8th Lord Kinnaird. His mother was Lady Olivia FitzGerald. Her father was William FitzGerald, the 2nd Duke of Leinster.

Political Career

Becoming a Lord

George Kinnaird became the Lord Kinnaird in 1826 after his father passed away. This title was a Scottish peerage. It did not automatically give him a seat in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament.

However, in 1831, he was given a new title: Baron Rossie. This title was a Peerage of the United Kingdom. It meant he could now sit and vote in the House of Lords.

Government Roles

In December 1839, Lord Kinnaird was chosen to be the Master of the Buckhounds. This was a role in the government under Lord Melbourne. He held this position until the government changed in 1841.

In early 1840, he joined the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.

Later Honors and Roles

In 1857, Lord Kinnaird received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Thistle. This is a very old and important award in Scotland.

Three years later, in 1860, he received another title: Baron Kinnaird. This was also a UK peerage. Unlike his first barony, this one was set up so his younger brother, Arthur, would inherit it if George had no sons.

Lord Kinnaird also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Perthshire from 1866 to 1878. This role meant he was the King's or Queen's representative in the area of Perthshire, Scotland.

Family Life

Lord Kinnaird married Frances Anne Georgina Ponsonby. They got married on December 14, 1837, in Dorset, England. They had three children together:

  • Hon. Olivia Barbara Kinnaird (who passed away in 1871).
  • Victor Alexander Kinnaird (1840–1851).
  • Charles Fox Kinnaird (1841–1860).

Lord Kinnaird passed away in January 1878 when he was 70 years old. He did not have any sons who lived longer than him. Because of this, his title of Baron Rossie ended when he died. His younger brother, Arthur, inherited his other titles, the Scottish lordship and the second barony of Kinnaird. Lady Kinnaird lived until March 1910, reaching the age of 92.
