George Lafayette Crenshaw (1854 – February 18, 1937) was a real estate developer and banker. He helped build many fancy neighborhoods in mid-city Los Angeles and Southern Los Angeles in the early 1900s. Some of these areas include Lafayette Square and Wellington Square. He owned the C.H. Brown Banking Company in Missouri and the Crenshaw Security Company in Los Angeles, California.

Building Los Angeles

After the early 1900s, Los Angeles started to grow very quickly. Many people wanted to move there because of the great weather and new jobs. There was a big "oil boom" in Southern California, which meant lots of oil was found. This created many jobs.

George L. Crenshaw saw this growth happening. He decided to invest in and manage ten different housing projects. These projects helped create new neighborhoods for the many people moving to Los Angeles. Two of these new, wealthy neighborhoods were Wellington Square and Lafayette Square.

George L. Crenshaw was known as a "real estate pioneer." This means he was one of the first and most important people to develop land and build homes in the area. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1905 and worked hard to help the city grow. He was part of a group of leaders who built homes for thousands of people. They also helped show the world how wonderful Southern California was.

His Legacy

The Crenshaw district in Los Angeles is named after George L. Crenshaw. The main road in that area, Crenshaw Boulevard, also carries his name. This shows how important he was to the development of Los Angeles.
