George Samuel Lindgren was an important British politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. He worked as a Member of Parliament (MP) and later as a Baron in the House of Lords. He was born in Islington, London, on November 11, 1900.

Early Political Life

In 1935, George Lindgren first tried to become a Member of Parliament. He ran for the area of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. However, he did not win this election. The seat was usually won by the Conservative Party.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Ten years later, in 1945, George Lindgren tried again. This time, he ran for the area of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire. He won the election and became a Member of Parliament. He beat the Conservative MP who was already in the seat.

Working in Government

After becoming an MP, George Lindgren was asked to join the new Labour government. He worked as a junior minister, helping different parts of the government.

  • From 1945 to 1946, he helped the Minister of National Insurance. This department helped people with things like sickness benefits and pensions.
  • From 1946 to 1950, he helped the Minister of Civil Aviation. This meant he worked on rules and plans for airplanes and flying.
  • From 1950 to 1951, he helped the Minister of Town and Country Planning. This role involved planning how towns and the countryside would be developed.

In 1952, he appeared in a film. The film showed him opening new council housing in Sutton in Ashfield.

Later Career and the House of Lords

George Lindgren continued to be an MP for Wellingborough until 1959. In the 1959 election, he lost his seat by a small number of votes. After leaving Parliament, he went back to his old job. He worked as a clerk for the railway at King's Cross station.

In 1961, he was given a special title. He became a Baron, which is a type of life peer. His full title was Baron Lindgren, of Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. This meant he could join the House of Lords. The House of Lords is another important part of the British Parliament.

He continued to serve in government while in the House of Lords.

  • From 1964 to 1966, he helped the Minister of Transport.
  • For a short time in 1966, he also helped the Ministry of Power.

Lord Lindgren passed away in 1971. He was 70 years old.
