George Earl Lovelace (born September 18, 1936 – died March 22, 2020) was an important American leader. He served in the United States Army and later became a politician. For 21 years, he was a member of the town council in Vienna, Virginia. He also served for one year in the Virginia House of Delegates. George Lovelace was a pioneer. He was the first African American person elected to the Virginia General Assembly from Northern Virginia since the time of Reconstruction.

Learning and Military Service

George Lovelace was a bright student. He finished Lincoln University in 1958. He earned a special degree in physics. After college, he joined the United States Army. He served in the Army's Signal Corps. This group helps with communications in the military. He worked there until 1979. When he retired, he was a Lieutenant Colonel. That's a high rank! He also earned another degree from George Washington University.

A Career in Public Service

George Lovelace loved to help his community.

Serving Vienna Town Council

In 1982, Lovelace was first chosen to be on the Vienna, Virginia town council. The town council helps make decisions for the town. He served on the council for many years, until 1996.

Joining the Virginia House of Delegates

In November 1996, a special election was held. This happened because the person holding the state delegate job, Richard L. Fisher, left early. Lovelace ran for the job as a Democrat. He won the election! He became a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. This group helps make laws for the state of Virginia.

He served for about a year. In the next election in 1997, he ran again. But he was defeated by Jeannemarie Devolites. He tried again in 1999 but did not win.

Later Public Roles

From 2003 to 2010, Lovelace returned to the Vienna town council. He continued to work for his town. He also became a member of the Fairfax County Park Authority board in 2004. This group helps manage parks in Fairfax County.

In 2006, Lovelace ran for mayor of Vienna. He did not win this election. He retired from the Vienna town council in 2010. The Virginia General Assembly honored him in 2011 for his many years of service. George Lovelace passed away on March 22, 2020, in Locust Grove, Virginia.

Family and Community Life

George Lovelace was a family man. He had two daughters, Dawn Klemann and Donalda L. Lovelace. He was also a very religious person. He was a devout Catholic. In his retirement, he continued to serve his community. He was an active member of the Lake of the Woods Lions Club. This club helps people in need.
