George Thomas John Nugent, 1st Marquess of Westmeath (born 17 July 1785 – died 5 May 1871) was an important person in Irish history. He was known by different titles during his life, including Lord Delvin and The Earl of Westmeath. He was an Anglo-Irish peer, which means he belonged to a noble family in Ireland with British roots.
Early Life and Family
George Thomas John Nugent was born in Clonyn, located in County Westmeath, Ireland. He was the only son of George Frederick Nugent, who was the 7th Earl of Westmeath. His mother was Maryanne.
Public Service and Titles
George Nugent became the Earl of Westmeath in 1814, taking over the title from his father. In 1822, he received an even higher title: Marquess of Westmeath. These titles were part of the Peerage of Ireland.
Having an Irish peerage did not automatically give him a seat in the British House of Lords. However, in 1831, he was chosen to be an Irish Representative Peer. This meant he could represent Ireland's nobility in the House of Lords.
In the same year, 1831, he was also given an important job: Lord-Lieutenant of Westmeath. A Lord-Lieutenant was a representative of the King or Queen in a county. George Nugent held this position for a long time, until he passed away.
Family Life
Lord Westmeath was married three times during his life.
His first marriage was to Lady Emily Anne Bennet Elizabeth Cecil in 1812. They had two children together:
- William Henry Wellington Brydges Nugent, Lord Delvin (1818–1819)
- Lady Rosa Emily Mary Anne Nugent (1814–1883), who later married Fulke Greville-Nugent, 1st Baron Greville.
His first marriage ended in 1827. He later married Maria Jervis in 1858, and that marriage ended in 1862. His last marriage was to Elizabeth Charlotte Verner in 1864.
Lord Westmeath also had other children. One daughter was Eliza Nugent (around 1806–1877), who married Alfred Harley, 6th Earl of Oxford and Mortimer. Another daughter was Cecilia Henrietta Nugent (1849–1886).
Lord Westmeath passed away in May 1871 at the age of 85. When he died, his title of Marquess ended because he had no surviving sons. His remaining titles were passed on to a relative, Anthony Nugent.
