George Preston was a dedicated British Army officer who served for over six decades. He rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant General, a very high position. His long career saw him fight in many important battles across Europe.

His Family

George Preston's parents were William Preston and Mary Ramsey, who lived in a place called Gorton. He married Lucy, who was the oldest daughter of a well-known person named James Johnston (Secretary of State). George Preston's family continued his legacy. His son, Sir Robert Preston, and two grandsons, also named Sir Robert Preston and Sir Henry Preston, became Preston baronets. This means they were part of a special noble family line.

A Long Military Career

George Preston's military journey began in 1739 when he became a cornet. A cornet was a junior officer, often responsible for carrying the flag for a cavalry troop. He was involved in a duel in 1743 where another officer, Cornet Alexander Hepburn, died.

Early Years and Battles

During the War of the Austrian Succession, George Preston fought bravely in several major battles. These included the Battle of Dettingen in 1743, the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745, the Battle of Roucoux in 1746, and the Battle of Val in 1747, where he was wounded.

He also played a part in the Seven Years' War. He fought in the Battle of Minden in 1759, the Battle of Warburg in 1760 (where his horse was killed and he was wounded again), the Battle of Kirch Denkern in 1771, and the Battle of Wilhelmsthal in 1762. In 1760, he was wounded during a British victory near Zierenberg.

Leading Regiments

George Preston quickly moved up in rank. On February 25, 1757, he became a Lieutenant Colonel in his regiment. Later, on November 2, 1770, he took over as Colonel of the 17th Light Dragoons, following John Hale.

His promotions continued: he became a Major General in 1772 and a Lieutenant General in 1777. He also fought in the Battle of Long Island during this time. From April 18, 1782, to February 3, 1785, he served as the Colonel of the famous Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons). His brother-in-law, General James Johnston, took over from him.

Later Life and Legacy

Lieutenant General George Preston passed away in Bath. His tomb can be found at All Saints' Church, Weston, in Bath. He is remembered for his long and distinguished service to the British Army.
