The George R. Newell House, also called Chateau LaSalle, is a historic house in the Stevens Square-Loring Heights neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was built a long time ago, in 1888. This house is known for its interesting history and its unique architectural style.

The Story of the George R. Newell House

Who Lived Here?

The house was first built for a businessman named Sumner T. McKnight. He was involved in the lumber and real estate industries. However, he sold the house almost right away.

The next owner was George R. Newell. He was one of the people who started a big grocery company in 1870. This company was called Stevens, Morse and Newell.

When George R. Newell passed away in 1921, his son, L.B. Newell, took over the company. L.B. Newell later changed the company's name to SuperValu, which is still a well-known name today! In later years, the house became an apartment building, owned by the Freerks family.

Cool Architecture and Design

An architecture expert named Larry Millett called the George R. Newell House "a Romanesque Revival hunk." This means it's a really grand and impressive house built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style.

The outside of the house is made from rough-cut Lake Superior sandstone. It has a cool terrace and an arched entrance porch. You can also see carved designs and a fancy dormer window at the very top of the roof.

Inside, the house has a beautiful Victorian style. It's decorated with fancy wood from oak and sycamore trees. There are also special lights from Tiffany & Co. and gold designs on the walls.

A Special Historic Place

Because of its unique architecture and history, the George R. Newell House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. This means it's recognized as an important historical building that should be protected.
