George Scott (born September 29, 1885 – died August 16, 1916) was an English footballer. He played as a midfielder and defender. Scott is best known for his time with Clapton Orient. He was one of many footballers who joined the army during World War I. Sadly, he died while serving his country.

George Scott's Football Journey
George Scott began his football career in his hometown of Sunderland. He played for local amateur teams like Braeside and Sunderland West End.
Joining Clapton Orient
In July 1908, Scott joined Clapton Orient. He quickly became a key player for the team. Over the next seven seasons, he played in many different positions. He was known for scoring about five goals each season.
Memorable Goals and Achievements
One of Scott's most important goals was against Tottenham Hotspur. On April 9, 1909, he scored the only goal in a game at White Hart Lane, giving Orient a big win. In 1911, George Scott was chosen to play for a special London team. This team traveled to France to play against a Paris team.
Serving in World War I
When World War I began, professional football games were stopped. Many players, including George Scott, decided to join the army.
The Footballers' Battalion
Scott joined the 17th Middlesex Regiment. This group was famously known as the "Footballers' Battalion". Many other players and staff from Clapton Orient also joined this battalion.
Sacrifice in Battle
During the Battle of the Somme, a very large and difficult battle, George Scott was wounded. He was taken prisoner by the enemy. Scott sadly died from his injuries on August 16, 1916, at a German military hospital.
George Scott was one of three Clapton Orient players who died during the war. The others were William Jonas and Richard McFadden. Scott is buried at St. Souplet British Cemetery in France.
