Kids Encyclopedia Facts

George Seton, 3rd Lord Seton (born around 1415, died 1478) was an important person from East Lothian, Scotland. He was a leader in the Scottish Parliament and also worked as an ambassador for Scotland.

George became the Lord Seton when he was still young. His father, William Seton, Master of Seton, died in a battle in 1424. Because his father died before George's grandfather, George inherited the title from his grandfather, John Seton, 2nd Lord Seton. This happened before 1434, and George was old enough to take on his duties by 1437.

His Work and Role

George Seton became a knight before 1439. This meant he was a respected nobleman.

In 1448, he traveled to other countries like Flanders, France, and Burgundy. He went with an important group of people from Scotland to represent his country. This was like being an early diplomat.

George was also part of the Scottish Parliament. He was known as a "Lord of Parliament." This meant he helped make decisions for the country. He first sat in Parliament in 1452.

Later, in 1458, he became a "Privy Councillor." This was a group of trusted advisors to the King. In 1469, he also became a "Lord Auditor," which meant he helped check the government's money and accounts.

He continued his work as an ambassador, traveling to England in 1472 and again in 1473. His job was to represent Scotland and discuss important matters with other countries.

Family Life

George Seton married two times. His first wife was Margaret. She was the only child of John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Buchan. They married before 1437.

His second wife was Christian Murray. They married before 1461.
