George True Bartlett (born April 29, 1856 – died March 11, 1949) was an important officer in the United States Army. He reached the high rank of major general. This means he was a very senior leader in the army.

Growing Up

George True Bartlett was born in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire on April 29, 1856. When he was older, he joined the United States Military Academy. This famous school is often called West Point.

He started at West Point in 1877. He was one of 53 students in his class. When he graduated in 1881, he was the tenth best student.

Military Career

After graduating, Bartlett became an officer in the Third Artillery Brigade. From 1885 to 1888, he taught military science at Pennsylvania Military College. This means he helped train future officers.

In 1889, he was promoted to first lieutenant. The next year, he finished his training at the Artillery School. He returned to teaching military science from 1894 to 1898. This time, he taught at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas.

When the Spanish–American War began, Bartlett became a major in the United States Volunteers. He worked as the chief commissary in Santiago, Cuba. This job involved managing supplies for the army. In 1899, he became a captain of artillery.

From 1903 to 1906, he worked at the Artillery School at Fort Monroe in Virginia. He also helped a group that was updating the rules for Coast Artillery drills. These rules guide how soldiers operate large guns near the coast.

On March 26, 1906, Bartlett was promoted to major in the Coast Artillery. He became a lieutenant colonel on December 4, 1909. In December 1911, he was promoted to colonel of the Coast Artillery.

In August 1917, he became a brigadier general. He spent a lot of time working with the General Staff. This is a group of officers who help plan and organize the army. In France, he led a group of railroad artillery. These were large guns moved by train.

From October 1917 to March 1918, he was in charge of Base Section Number 3. Later, he joined a special military group in Greece. He also worked as the United States' military representative in Athens.

On September 25, 1918, he retired from the army as a brigadier general. Years later, in 1930, the United States Congress brought back his major general status.

Later Life and Death

George True Bartlett lived to be 92 years old. He passed away in San Antonio, Texas on March 11, 1949. He was buried at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, also in San Antonio.
