George William Dargan (born May 11, 1841 – died June 29, 1898) was an important politician from South Carolina. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he was part of the United States Congress. He was also the great-grandson of Lemuel Benton.

Early Life and Education
George William Dargan was born on May 11, 1841. His birthplace was a spot called "Sleepy Hollow," near Darlington, South Carolina. As a young person, he went to schools in his home county. He also attended the South Carolina Military Academy.
Serving During the Civil War
Dargan served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. This war lasted from 1861 to 1865. He was a private in the 2nd South Carolina Artillery unit. He stayed in the army for the entire war.
Starting a Career in Law
After the Civil War, George Dargan decided to study law. He worked hard and became a lawyer in 1872. He then started his own law practice in Darlington, South Carolina.
Entering Politics
Dargan soon became interested in politics and serving his community.
Serving in the State House
In 1877, Dargan was elected to the State House of Representatives. This is part of the state government in South Carolina. He helped make laws for the state.
Working as a Solicitor
Later, in 1880, Dargan took on another important role. He became the solicitor for the fourth judicial circuit of South Carolina. A solicitor is like a prosecutor. They represent the state in legal cases.
