George Washington Taylor (born January 16, 1849 – died December 21, 1932) was an important politician from Alabama. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he was a member of the United States Congress. He helped make laws for the country.
Biography
Early Life and Education
George Washington Taylor was born on January 16, 1849. His birthplace was a plantation called "Roselawn" near Montgomery, Alabama. He went to private schools when he was young.
While still a schoolboy in Columbia, South Carolina, George Taylor joined the Confederate States Army. This was in November 1864, near the end of the American Civil War. He served in the army until the war ended.
After the war, Taylor continued his education. He graduated from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1867.
A Career in Law and Politics
After college, George Taylor worked as a teacher in Mobile, Alabama. While teaching, he also studied law. He became a lawyer in Mobile in November 1871. He started his law practice in Butler, Alabama, in 1872.
Taylor also became involved in politics. He was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1878 and 1879. This is a group of lawmakers for the state of Alabama. From 1880 to 1892, he served as the State solicitor for Alabama's first judicial circuit. A solicitor is like a lawyer who represents the state in court. He chose not to serve a third term in this role. In 1883, he moved to Demopolis, Alabama.
Serving in Congress
George Taylor was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1897. This meant he represented Alabama in the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. He served for nine terms, from March 4, 1897, to March 3, 1915.
In 1914, he decided not to run for re-election. He then went back to practicing law in Demopolis, Alabama.
Taylor continued to be active in the Democratic Party. He led the State Democratic convention in 1901. This meeting helped create a new state constitution. He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1920. At this big meeting, the party chose its candidate for president.
George Washington Taylor passed away on December 21, 1932. He died in Rome, Georgia, while visiting the city. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama.
