George Wilkes Unett (1772–1825) was a brave British officer who served in the Royal Artillery. He fought in the Napoleonic Wars, which were a series of big conflicts in Europe.

A Life in the Army

George Unett was born in 1772. His father was Thomas Unett, a church leader in Coppenhall, Cheshire. George decided to follow his older brother, Richard, into the army. He joined the Royal Artillery, which is the part of the army that uses cannons and other big guns.

George Unett became a major, which is an important rank. He took part in many battles. In 1807, he was at the Battle of Copenhagen. He also fought in several places in the West Indies.

One of his most famous battles was the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. This was a very important battle that helped end the Napoleonic Wars. After Waterloo, George Unett continued with the army as they moved towards Paris. He was part of the siege of Cambray. For his bravery at Waterloo, he received the Waterloo Medal. George Unett passed away in 1825.

Family Life

In 1822, when he was around 50 years old, George Unett married Eliza Jones. Her brother, Sir John Thomas Jones, was also a military engineer. George and Eliza had one daughter named Frances-Eliza, who was born in 1824.
