Georges-François de Framond (born February 4, 1733, in Grèzes, Lozère – died September 28, 1785, in Montargis) was an important officer in the French Navy. He played a part in the American Revolutionary War, which was when the American colonies fought for their independence from Great Britain. For his service, he became a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, a special group for officers who fought in that war.

Life as a Naval Officer

Georges-François de Framond came from a family in Gévaudan, France. His brothers, Charles-Auguste Framond de Grèzes and Étienne Aimé François Framond de La Framondie, also joined the Navy. Georges-François started his naval career in 1748 as a Garde-Marine, which was a training position for young officers. By 1757, he was promoted to Lieutenant.

Early Commands

In 1765, Framond was given command of the ship Caméléon, which had 20 guns. He led this ship during an important expedition to Larache.

A few years later, in 1770, he was honored with the title of Knight in the Order of Saint Louis. This was a special award given for bravery and service to the French military.

In 1773, Framond served as the first officer on a large 74-gun ship called the Protecteur. He helped sail this ship from Brest to Toulon. Later, in 1776, he commanded the frigate Mignonne, a ship with 26 guns. On the Mignonne, he carried out missions to places like Greece and Cyprus.

Role in the American Revolutionary War

Framond was promoted to Captain in 1778. He then took command of the 32-gun frigate Sultane. On this ship, he sailed between Cyprus and Toulon, delivering important diplomatic messages.

In 1780, he became the captain of the 64-gun ship Caton. This ship was part of a squadron, which is a group of warships, led by Admiral Luc Urbain de Bouëxic, comte de Guichen. The Caton later joined another squadron led by Admiral François Joseph Paul de Grasse.

Framond and the Caton took part in several major battles during the American Revolutionary War:

Later Career and Challenges

On March 24, 1782, Framond was promoted to Chef de Division, a high rank in the Navy. However, his career soon faced difficulties.

Before the Battle of the Saintes on April 10, 1782, his ship, the Caton, became stuck because there was no wind. Even though another ship was sent to help him, Framond decided to anchor his ship at Basse-Terre without getting permission from his commanders. Because of this decision, he missed the important Battle of the Saintes.

A few days later, on April 19, 1782, the Caton was captured by the enemy during the Battle of the Mona Passage.

After these events, Georges-François de Framond faced serious consequences for his actions. He was removed from the Navy and spent time imprisoned. He was later released in 1785 but was ordered to live in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. He passed away in October of that same year.
