Georges Augustus Gaston De Coppens (1836–1862) was an officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He sadly lost his life during the Battle of Antietam.

Early Life and Military Interest

Georges De Coppens was born in France in 1836. He attended the Marine Academy there. Later, his family moved to New Orleans in the United States. Georges was very interested in military arts and training. He was also known for taking part in formal fights called duels. One famous duel was with an opera critic named Emile Bozonier.

Joining the Confederate Army

When the American Civil War began, Georges De Coppens joined the Confederate army. He asked President Jefferson Davis for special permission. He wanted to form a unique group of soldiers called a Zouave battalion. Zouaves were known for their colorful uniforms and special fighting style.

Forming the Zouave Battalion

De Coppens successfully organized six companies for his Zouave battalion. These soldiers were meant to serve for twelve months. They were based in Pensacola. Georges De Coppens became their Lieutenant Colonel. His brother and father also served in this battalion. His father, Baron August de Coppens, worked as the Quartermaster. This meant he was in charge of supplies.

Service in the Civil War

De Coppens's unit was called the 1st Louisiana Zouaves. They joined the Army of Northern Virginia. This was a major Confederate army. They took part in the Peninsula Campaign, a series of battles.

The Battle of Antietam

In 1862, the 1st Louisiana Zouaves fought in the Battle of Antietam. This battle is also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg. It was one of the bloodiest single-day battles in American history. During this battle, Georges De Coppens was given temporary command. He led the 8th Florida Infantry Regiment. Sadly, he was listed among the casualties of this battle. This means he was either wounded or killed. Records show he did not appear again after this.
