Georges Loinger facts for kids
Georges Loinger (29 August 1910 – 28 December 2018) was a French resistance fighter during World War II. He began fighting against Nazi Germany in 1939 but was captured in 1940. He escaped soon after, and rescued hundreds of Jewish children over then next few years. Till September 1943, that part of frontier was guarded by Italian army: Loinger remembers one day Italian high officer secretly told him he approved what Loinger did, that's his rescue activity. After September, there was German invasion and the activity became harder.
He was awarded the medal of honorary citizen of the city of Strasbourg in 2014. In July 2016, he was made an officer in the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Loinger was born in Strasbourg. He was Jewish. He turned 100 in August 2010. Loinger died in Paris on 28 December 2018 at the age of 108.
