Georgess McHargue (born June 7, 1941 – died July 18, 2011) was an American writer and poet. She wrote many books for young readers.

Georgess McHargue was born in New York City. She started her career working at Golden Press. Later, she became an editor at Doubleday, a big publishing company.

She had a long and successful career as an author. Georgess McHargue wrote 35 books. These included fun stories for kids. She also wrote nonfiction books about interesting topics. These topics included archaeology (studying old things), history, mythology (ancient stories), and paranormal studies (things that seem unexplainable). She also explored folklore (traditional stories) and the occult.

Her book The Beasts of Never (1988) was nominated for a National Book Award. This is a very important award for writers. She also wrote many reviews for The New York Times Book Review.

Later in her life, McHargue moved to Groton, Massachusetts. There, she worked on reports about archaeology and history. She worked for the Michael's Institute for Conservation Archaeology at Harvard's Peabody Museum. She also worked for a company called Timelines Inc.

One of her famous books was Facts, Frauds, and Phantasms: A Survey of the Spiritualist Movement (1972). In this book, she looked closely at spiritualism. She was skeptical about it. She showed how some people who claimed to talk to spirits were actually tricking others. One review called her book a "well researched and intriguing case study in human gullibility."
