The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is a special house in Abiquiú, New Mexico. It was the main home and art studio of the famous artist Georgia O'Keeffe (1887–1986). She lived and worked here from 1943 until she passed away.

Today, this historic house is part of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The museum has locations in Santa Fe and Abiquiú. You can visit the Home and Studio on public tours from March to November. Just remember to get your tickets in advance! In 1998, this important site became a National Historic Landmark. This means it's recognized as one of the most significant art places in the southwestern United States.

About Georgia O'Keeffe's Home

The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is in a small village called Abiquiú. It's close to the St. Thomas Church. The building is made of adobe, which is a traditional building material. Adobe walls are very thick. The roof is flat and supported by strong wooden beams called vigas. Smaller wooden pieces, called latillas, cross over these beams.

A Unique Design

The house has different sections, each only one room deep. These sections surround a central patio or plaza. O'Keeffe added some modern touches to her home. She included skylights and large windows. These windows offer amazing views of the landscape. They also let in lots of natural light, even in parts of the house that usually would be dark.

O'Keeffe really wanted these modern changes. She once said, "I didn't want a Spanish house; I didn't want an Indian house, [or] a Mexican house; I wanted my house!" This shows how much she wanted her home to be unique.

History of the Home

Some parts of the house might be from the 1730s. When Georgia O'Keeffe first saw it in the 1930s, it was in bad shape. The Roman Catholic church owned it then and didn't want to sell it. But eventually, they agreed. O'Keeffe bought the house in 1943.

She worked with her friend Maria Chabot to fix up and modernize the property. This work was finished in 1946. After that, O'Keeffe made it her permanent home. There's also a smaller building on the property. This was her main art studio.

O'Keeffe lived in this house until 1984. She moved to Santa Fe two years before she passed away at 98 years old. In 1989, the Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation took over the property. Now, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum owns and manages it.

The property was officially named a National Historic Landmark in 1998.
