About Georgiana Cholmondeley
Georgiana was the daughter of Peregrine Bertie, 3rd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. Her mother was Mary, the Duke's second wife. Georgiana grew up in a noble family.
Her Marriage and Family
Georgiana married George Cholmondeley on April 25, 1791. At the time, he was an Earl. The wedding took place in London. Together, they had three children:
- Lady Charlotte Georgiana Cholmondeley (born February 1795 – died June 24, 1828). She married Lt.-Col. Hugh Henry Seymour. They had children together.
- George Horatio Cholmondeley, 2nd Marquess of Cholmondeley (born January 16, 1792 – died May 8, 1870).
- William Henry Hugh Cholmondeley, 3rd Marquess of Cholmondeley (born March 31, 1800 – died December 16, 1884).
Other children also lived in their household. These included Harriet, born around 1790, and Georgiana Seymour.
An Important Family Role
Through Georgiana's marriage, a very old and important job came to the Cholmondeley family. This job was called the Lord Great Chamberlain. It had been held by Georgiana's brother, Robert Bertie, 4th Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. After his death in 1779, the role passed to her family. Her son, George Cholmondeley, 2nd Marquess of Cholmondeley, later shared this position.
Role in the Royal Court
In 1795, Georgiana was given a special role in the royal court. She became a Lady of the Bedchamber to the Princess of Wales. This meant she was a close attendant to the Princess.
Their Family Home
The family's main home was Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire. The Earl, Georgiana's husband, redesigned the castle himself. It was rebuilt between 1801 and 1804. In 1815, her husband was given the higher title of Marquess of Cholmondeley. This made Georgiana a Marchioness.
Later Life
Lord Cholmondeley was fifteen years older than Georgiana. He passed away in 1827. His oldest son, George, took over his title. Georgiana, the Dowager Marchioness, died in London when she was 73 years old.
