Mary Bertie was an important person in the British royal court. She was also known as Mary Panton before she married. She was the Duchess of Ancaster and Kesteven. She passed away on October 19, 1793.

Early Life and Family
Mary Bertie was the daughter of Thomas Panton from Newmarket. Her father worked for King George II. He was an "equerry," which means he was an officer who helped the King with his horses. Thomas Panton also managed the Thurlow Hunt. Mary's mother's name was Priscilla.
Marriage to the Duke
Mary Panton became the second wife of Peregrine Bertie, 3rd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. The Duke's first wife had passed away in 1743. Mary and the Duke were married on November 27, 1750.
Their Children
Mary and the Duke had six children together. Their children were:
- Lady Mary Catherine Bertie (born 1754, died 1767)
- Peregrine Thomas Bertie, Marquess of Lindsey (born 1755, died 1758)
- An unnamed son (born and died in 1759)
- Robert Bertie, 4th Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven (born 1756, died 1779)
- Priscilla Barbara Elizabeth Bertie, Baroness Willoughby de Eresby (born 1761, died 1828)
- Lady Georgina Charlotte Bertie (born 1761, died 1838). She married George Cholmondeley, 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley.
Family Connections at Court
After Mary married the Duke, her father, Thomas Panton, received a special job. He became the Master of the King's Running Horses. Later, his son, also named Thomas, took over this position. This shows how important the family became.
Life at Court
Mary Bertie held an important role in the royal household. From 1761 until her death in 1793, she was the Mistress of the Robes to Queen Charlotte. Queen Charlotte was the wife of King George III. The Mistress of the Robes was the highest-ranking lady in the Queen's household. She was in charge of the Queen's clothes and jewelry. She also helped organize royal events.

- In 1757, Sir Joshua Reynolds painted a portrait of Mary and her husband.
- Sir Joshua Reynolds also painted another portrait of the Duchess between 1765 and 1771.
- A small watercolor painting of her was made by John Smart in 1763. This painting is now kept at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
Later Life and Death
Mary Bertie, the Duchess of Ancaster and Kesteven, passed away in Italy. She died on October 19, 1793.
