Georgina Norway (1833 – 1915) was a British writer. She was famous for her exciting adventure stories for children. She wrote many books that were popular in her time.
Early Life of Georgina Norway
Georgina Shute was born in Liverpool, England, on December 2, 1833. Her father, Stephen Shute, was a merchant. Her mother was also named Georgina. She was baptized in a church in Liverpool a month after she was born.
Becoming a Writer
Georgina married Arthur Stanbury Norway in 1857. They had two sons, Nevell Edmund and Arthur Hamilton.
After her husband passed away in 1886, Georgina started writing. Her first book, The Brand of Cain, came out in 1888. She wrote under the name G. Norway. Some people thought "G. Norway" was a man! But newspapers like The Atheneum knew she was a woman.
Her books were very well-liked. For example, a newspaper called The Standard said her book The Loss of John Humble was "full of life and adventure." Another paper, The Spectator, called it "a very spirited story of the sea."
Family and Legacy
Georgina's son, Arthur Hamilton, also became a writer. Her grandson, Nevil Shute, became a very famous novelist too! Nevil Shute even used the name of one of his grandmother's characters, Johnnie Pascoe, in his own books.
Nevil Shute said that being around writers like his father and grandmother helped him become a writer. He believed that growing up in a family of writers made him familiar with the idea of writing books.
Georgina Norway moved to Ireland in 1912. She passed away there on March 3, 1915.
