Georgios Bartzokas (born June 11, 1965) is a famous Greek basketball coach. He used to be a professional basketball player. Today, he is the head coach for Olympiacos, a team in the Greek Basketball League and the EuroLeague.
Bartzokas has won many important titles as a coach. He helped Olympiacos Piraeus win the World Club Championship in 2013. He also led Olympiacos to win the EuroLeague championship in 2013. This is Europe's top club competition. Bartzokas has been named the EuroLeague Coach of the Year three times: in 2013, 2022, and 2023.

Early Life and Youth Basketball
Georgios Bartzokas was born in Athens, Greece, on June 11, 1965. When he was very young, he first played soccer.
In 1977, at age 12, he started playing basketball. He joined the youth teams of the Greek club Maroussi Athens. He played for Maroussi's youth teams until 1981.
Playing Career
After playing for Maroussi's youth teams, Bartzokas joined their main team in 1981. He was 16 years old. Bartzokas was a tall player, about 2.00 meters (6 feet 7 inches) tall. He played as a power forward and center.
He started playing in the Greek 2nd Division during the 1981–82 season. Bartzokas played for Maroussi Athens until 1992. He was often the team's top scorer and was also the team captain.
Bartzokas' playing career ended when he was 27. He had serious knee injuries to both of his legs. Before these injuries, big Greek clubs like AEK Athens and Olympiacos Piraeus were interested in signing him.
Coaching Career Highlights
Starting as a Coach
Bartzokas began coaching in Greece in 1987, when he was 22. He was still playing basketball at the time. After he stopped playing, Bartzokas became a head coach for several Greek clubs. These included Pefki, Vrilissia Basket, GS Kifissias, and OFI Irakleio. He helped Vrilissia Basket get promoted to higher leagues twice. He also helped Kifissias get one promotion.
In 2003, while coaching Kifissias, Bartzokas also became an assistant coach for Maroussi Athens. This was his old team. He worked as an assistant coach for Maroussi until 2006. During this time, Maroussi reached the finals of the FIBA Europe League in 2004. They also made it to the Greek League finals in 2004 and the Greek Cup finals in 2006.
Leading Olympia Larissa
Before the 2006–07 season, Bartzokas became the head coach of Olympia Larissa. In his first year, he led the team to the playoffs of the Greek Basketball League. This was the first time in the club's history they reached the playoffs. Olympia Larissa finished seventh overall. Because of this success, Bartzokas was named the Greek League Coach of the Year in 2007. He led Olympia to the playoffs again the next year.
Coaching Maroussi Athens
For the 2009–10 season, Bartzokas became the head coach of Maroussi Athens. Under his coaching, Maroussi reached the Top 16 stage of the EuroLeague. In the Greek League, Maroussi finished third. Bartzokas was again named the Greek League Best Coach for that season.
Time with Panionios Athens
Bartzokas became the head coach of Panionios Athens before the 2010–11 season. In his second season with Panionios, the team finished third in the Greek Basketball League. This led to Bartzokas being named the Greek League Coach of the Year in 2012.
First Period with Olympiacos Piraeus
In June 2012, Bartzokas became the head coach of Olympiacos Piraeus. This team plays in the EuroLeague. With Olympiacos, Bartzokas won the EuroLeague championship in 2013. He was the first Greek coach ever to win this title. After this big win, he was named the EuroLeague Coach of the Year in 2013.
Bartzokas also led Olympiacos to win the FIBA Intercontinental Cup in 2013. This is like a World Club Championship. They beat the Brazilian team Pinheiros.
Coaching Lokomotiv Kuban
On July 5, 2015, Bartzokas signed a two-year deal with the Russian club Lokomotiv Kuban. He led this team to their first-ever EuroLeague Final Four in 2016. They beat FC Barcelona in the playoffs to get there. Bartzokas was named the VTB United League Coach of the Year for the 2015–16 season.
Time with FC Barcelona
On July 8, 2016, Bartzokas signed a three-year contract with the Spanish team FC Barcelona. With Barcelona, he won the Catalan League championship in 2016. He left the club after one season.
Coaching Khimki Moscow Region
On June 30, 2017, Bartzokas returned to Russia to coach Khimki Moscow Region. He signed a two-year contract. With Khimki, Bartzokas won the Gomelsky Cup tournament in 2017. He left Khimki in January 2019.
Return to Olympiacos
On January 10, 2020, Bartzokas came back to coach Olympiacos Piraeus. The 2019–20 season was stopped because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the 2021–22 season, Bartzokas won his first Greek national title with Olympiacos, the Greek Cup. Soon after, he also won the Greek League championship. In the 2021–22 EuroLeague season, he led Olympiacos to the Final Four, where they finished fourth. Bartzokas was named the EuroLeague Coach of the Year in 2022.
Bartzokas continued his success, winning the Greek Super Cup in 2022. He then led Olympiacos to win the Greek Cup and the Greek League championship in 2023. He was named the Greek League Coach of the Year in 2023. Olympiacos also reached the EuroLeague Final in 2023, where they narrowly lost to Real Madrid. Bartzokas was named the EuroLeague Coach of the Year again in 2023.
He also won the Greek Super Cup in 2023 and the Greek Cup in 2024.

Georgios Bartzokas' family comes from the Greek village of Kentriko, in Arta. His father, Andreas, was born in 1925 and passed away in 2015.
