Geppetto is a very important character in the comic book series Fables. This series was created by Bill Willingham and published by DC Comics through its Vertigo brand. Even though he is rarely seen, his actions shaped the entire story.
Geppetto is secretly known as The Adversary. He planned and led the takeover of the Fable homelands. This forced many Fables to escape to the ordinary human world. During the war against his Empire, Geppetto was the main bad guy. Later, he was given a special agreement called amnesty, and another character named Mister Dark took his place as the main threat.
In 2009, Geppetto was named one of the greatest comic book villains of all time by IGN, a popular website.
Geppetto's Story and His Creations
Geppetto's character is based on the famous woodcarver from the book The Adventures of Pinocchio. In the Fables comics, Geppetto created Pinocchio, a boy made of wood. After many adventures, Pinocchio was magically turned into a human boy by the Blue Fairy.
However, becoming human did not stop Pinocchio from wanting to explore. He often left home for many years. This left Geppetto feeling lonely and waiting for his return.
To solve his loneliness, Geppetto decided to create new children. He first made older sons, hoping they would be more grown-up than Pinocchio. Then, he started making daughters too. The Blue Fairy continued to visit him. Sometimes, she would like one of Geppetto's new creations and turn them human. Because Pinocchio's wandering had also hurt her, the Blue Fairy added a special magic. This magic made the new human children loyal to Geppetto and dedicated to their home.
Geppetto's Powers and Influence
Geppetto is not physically strong, but he is very powerful in other ways. Over the years, he has learned a lot of magic. He learned from the many wizards who worked for the lords under his control. Because of this, he is now considered a very powerful sorcerer.
He has many protective spells covering him. These spells make him almost impossible to harm. This means he is very well protected from attacks.
As the true leader behind the Empire, Geppetto has enormous power in the Fable Homelands. Most citizens do not even know that he is the real power. He controls a massive army. He also has many magical resources at his command.
